Centipede grass is a common low maintenance fast growing, coarse lawn grass. You can overseed with centipede grass by evenly distributing the seats throughout the lawn area in creating future environmental conditions favorable to the growth of centipede grass. Centipede grass prefers moist high pH soil and direct sunlight.
There are three ways to planting Centipede Grass: centipede grass seed, sod or plugs. Which procedure you use largely depends on what you prefer from a fixed lawn in terms of costs, time and work.
Rake the lawn clear rocks and organic debris using a flexible metal rake. Sow the lawn with centipede grass seed using a fertilizer spreader to distribute the seeds. Use one to two pounds of seed for 1,000 square feet for receiving and mature one in three to four pounds for 1,000 square feet when seeding a new area.
Sprinkle a 1/12-inch layer of lawn lime over the seeds using a spreader.
Lawn lime increases the pH balance of the soil over time. Cover the lime and seeds with half inch of peat moss or clean compost organic fertilizer. Fertilizer promotes centipede grass growth by regulating temperature fluctuations, increasing moisture retention and adding vital minerals and nutrients to the soil.
Water the grass seed once daily for two weeks or until new centipede grass growth is visible through the fertilizer. Trim back trees and bushes to increase the amount of sunlight on the lawn.
The fastest and least laborious way to start a centipede grass lawn is with centipede grass-sod ; however, it is also the most costly.
The first step in laying the grass sod is to till the soil and to add a nitrogen-rich fertilizer and organic matter as you grow.
Next, place centipede grass strips over the ground. Make sure the sod strips ‘ edges touch, but the strips ‘ ends are staggered. The sod should be made from centipede grass, which helps to connect sod to the soil. When the sod is laid, roll the sod carefully and water. Keep your grass sod for three to four weeks so that it is watered well.
In terms of work, cost and time to the established lawn, centipede grass plugs fell in the middle. Start by planting the centipede grass plugs in the area, where the centipede grass plugs are grown.
At this point, the soil will receive organic material and rich nitrogen fertilizer. You may want to use a sod cutter before packing, if the grass had already been established.
Next, insert the centipede grass plugs about one foot apart into the lawn using a sod plug driller bit. Water the area thoroughly and keep well watered for the next 3-4 weeks after inserting the plugging.
After your centipede grass lawn has been established, very little maintenance is needed, although some are needed. Occasional fertilization and watering involve grass maintenance. Two time a year, once in spring, and once in autumn, fertilize your centipede grass. Apply a rich nitrogen fertilizer lightly once in the spring and in the fall again. Fertilization can lead to problems with your grass centipede.
Only when signs of water stress in the period of drought begin to show water to your centipede. Water stress indications include a color faded or the grass with a wilted look. Water once a week deeply during drought, instead of shallow several times a week.
