We know that not all lawns are the same, some are rich in nutrients and ready to grow plants while some just need a little more tender care. If your property is more of the latter and you’re wondering how to grow grass in sandy soil, it can be frustrating when you do not know where to start. Fear not, here are some tips to achieve that perfect green lawn with sandy soil.
Remove debris, gather trash, separate big rocks, safely remove dead roots, and kill all weeds – these are the foundation of soil preparation. Till the lawn area and dig up to 6 inches deep to remove any unnecessary elements. This first step is crucial, as it will be the base for adding the seeds and nutrients in the next steps.
One of the reasons behind the difficulty of growing grass in the sand is that the soil can’t retain moisture long enough for plants’ absorption. Good news is we can reverse this by using a mixture of compost or creating a loamy topsoil. Dig about six inches deep using a rake and cultivate, spreading organic material over the surface to incorporate well with the sand.
Like any other soil, the chances of better plant growth are increased when using fertilizers. Spread the fertilizer evenly, coating the whole area in two batches. After even spreading, lightly rake the top of the soil again. To seal everything in, water the whole area a little so that the nutrients, fertilizer, and other added materials are not easily blown by the wind.
Now that the soil is ready, it is time to look at your grass options. Since underneath the topsoil is still the sandy area, some grass types thriving in such conditions are bermuda grass and bluestem grass. Ask your supplier about your lawn’s current state and see which form he recommends: sod form or seed form.
If you’re using a sod grass, unroll it and stagger the joints between pieces. Make sure that the roots touch your topsoil and water it daily. With seeds, spread them evenly using a broadcaster, water lightly, and then top with clippings or chopped straw to help the soil retain its moisture.
Dealing with water can be tricky as you have to determine the adequate amount of water. Water the surface daily. Also keep an eye on all areas. Too much water can wash away the grass seed, which further leads to bald spots in your lawn.
After all the hard work, achieving a green and beautiful lawn will still need additional patience. Apart from watering it, maintenance by clipping is also one way to keep it healthy. Allow the grass to reach at least three inches in height before you proceed with cutting. Set the lawn mower at two inches, so that you don’t damage and disturb young and delicate grass.
Since your soil is constantly exposed to water, there are tendencies wherein it can be washed away especially during heavy rain. To retain the health of your soil, amend it by using compost every three months during the growing season. Rake the compost across the lawn, but make sure to not use clay as grass has difficulty growing in hard soil consistency.
I know it can be frustrating, when you’ve planted, poured time, effort and waited but still nothing sprouted. Growing grass in sandy soil is not impossible, but it does need patience and a little more research. Follow these tips, you’ll have a refreshing lawn during summer.
