Most of the lawn are built on lands where you have topsoil and some organic or similar material for about first six to eight inches, which was prepared when the home was built.
Under that, all you have is non-fertile soil or filler material, which doesn’t help a bit when it comes to lawn nutrition. So we need regular fertilizer apply. Fertilizer can be of two types: organic and synthetic.
Researchers proved that synthetic fertilizer, even though, it makes the lawn look beautiful, doesn’t enhance microbiological activities. Case studies online shows lawn with synthetic products looks completely different under microscope than a organic lawn. Organic lawn has a lot more micro organic activities visible which proves that the lawn is healthy.
One of the best lawn ferlizers is Milorganite. And the question is that “when to apply milorganite to lawn”?
Milorgranite is one of the popular organic fertilizer, which gives slow-release nutrition for extended period. I actually use a number almost half of the suggested settings, for example, it suggested 11.5 setting on the package. And I am using 5.546 setting. These ensures half of indented material flow during apply.
The reason is I will apply twice in a particular area once applied in linear fashion and then use crisscross pattern to apply perpendicularly to make sure every zone gets uniform supply. Otherwise you may get green patches followed by yellow patterns based on difference in application which you want to avoid.
Bermuda grass remains dormant for four to six months in Mid Eastern so no need for any fertilizer during that time. I also believe offseason apply when grass is dormant is a waste.
In fact, it feeds the weeds which are dominant at that point so I am not in favor of offseason fertilizer apply, especially for Bermuda in southern lawns.
I will suggest for southern lawns apply twice or thrice in a year based on your need and result apply first time when the early spring weeds are mostly gone, otherwise you are feeding the weeds then divide your application to equal gap till mid-august when you apply last time. Because at this point the grass growth becomes slower so in between you apply fertilizer in equal gap.
Besides, you can briefly remove some of the weeds by mowing the grass prior to applying the fertilizer. Make sure to collect the grass clippings so that you can apply milorgranite afterwards.

So let’s say I am planning 3 application per year and applied first on 1st of May based on lawn weed condition as suggested earlier that I know the last one will be around mid-august. So I calculate the middle of two dates and will put second application on around third week of June. Within four to six weeks we’ll see some noticeable difference.
Your lawn will look better and the iron will give bluish tint which looks beautiful and the best parties you will have. Be happy and satisfied knowing that not just good-looking but it is strong and healthy lawn.
